Our introduction to alpacas came in 1997 when we were driving in the country and saw a sign for an Alpaca Open Day. Not even sure what an alpaca was, we entered and spent a couple of hours soaking up information, and enjoying our first experience of handling these beautiful animals. Sometime later we attended a few regional shows, and read all the information about alpacas we could find. We became intrigued with the idea of owning alpacas as we learned more about them.
Avon Park Alpacas was established in October 1997, and in 2006 we relocated to 13 acres at Red Hill on the Mornington Peninsula. Our herd has now grown to over 70 alpacas, both huacayas and suris. Our breeding and show suris are agisted with Pinjarra Alpacas at Strathbogie, for ease of access to our own stud males, and to the Surilana males that we have used as part of out breeding program.
As our herd grew we have purchased 4 magnificent stud males in partnership with other breeders to ensure access to quality genetics at a reasonable cost. We have also certified 5 males that we have bred, and are pleased to have sold shares in some to other prestige studs, such as Pinjarra Alpacas and Jaeger Alpacas . Full details of all males can be found on the stud males page.
Our aim is to breed for excellence by focussing primarily on heritable, commercial traits. We maintain a record keeping system that measures and records performance for specific commercial fleece characteristics, which form the basis for our breeding program.

Happy alpaca-ing!
